How to Install Mods
Complete step-by-step guide for installing Minecraft mods.

Java Edition Only
Before You Start
- You need Minecraft Java Edition (not Bedrock)
- Install Java 17 or newer - Download from Adoptium
- Run vanilla Minecraft at least once to create game folders
- Backup your worlds before adding mods
Choose Your Method
Method 1: Using a Launcher
Recommended • 5 minutes
Launchers handle everything automatically - this is the easiest and safest way.
1Download a Launcher
2Create Instance & Add Mods
- • Click "Create Instance" and select MC version
- • Choose Forge or Fabric mod loader
- • Browse and click "Install" on mods you want
3Click Play!
That's it! Your mods are installed.
Method 2: Manual Forge
Advanced • 15 minutes
- 1Download Forge from files.minecraftforge.net
- 2Run the installer, select "Install Client"
- 3Download mod .jar files from CurseForge or Modrinth
- 4Place mods in your mods folder:Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft\mods
- 5Launch Minecraft with Forge profile
Method 3: Manual Fabric
For performance mods • 10 minutes
- 1Download Fabric from fabricmc.net
- 2Run installer, select Client tab, click Install
- 3Important: Download Fabric API (required for most mods)
- 4Place Fabric API + your mods in the mods folder
- 5Launch with Fabric profile
Troubleshooting
Game crashes on startup
- Check mod versions match your Minecraft version
- Ensure all dependencies are installed
- Try removing mods one by one to find the conflict
- Allocate more RAM in launcher settings
Mods don't appear in game
- Verify mods are in the correct mods folder
- Ensure you're launching with the modded profile
- Check that mod loader (Forge/Fabric) is installed
'Missing dependency' error
- Read the error message - it tells you what's missing
- Download the required dependency mod
- Common ones: Fabric API, Architectury, GeckoLib
Performance issues / Low FPS
- Install Sodium (Fabric) or Embeddium (Forge)
- Allocate more RAM (but not too much)
- Update Java to version 17 or 21
