Getting Started
How do I join a Minecraft server?
Open Minecraft, go to Multiplayer (Java) or Play > Servers (Bedrock), click 'Add Server', paste the server IP, and click Join.
Is joining Minecraft servers free?
Yes! Joining any server is free. You only need Minecraft. Some servers offer optional paid cosmetics, but gameplay is free.
What is a server IP?
A server IP (like play.example.com) is the address you enter in Minecraft to connect. It's like a website URL for servers.
Do I need to download anything?
For most servers, no. Modded servers require you to install the same mods the server uses.
Server Types
What are the different server types?
Common types include Survival, SkyBlock, Factions, BedWars, Prison, SMP, Creative, and Minigames. Each offers unique gameplay.
What is SMP?
SMP (Survival Multiplayer) servers focus on community survival with minimal plugins, often vanilla or semi-vanilla gameplay.
What is Factions?
Factions servers feature team-based PvP with base building, raiding, and territorial warfare.
What is SkyBlock?
SkyBlock servers start you on a floating island where you expand using limited resources and complete challenges.
Java vs Bedrock
What's the difference between Java and Bedrock?
Java is PC-only with mod support. Bedrock is cross-platform (mobile, console, Windows 10) with better performance but fewer mods.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
Not normally, but crossplay servers using GeyserMC allow both editions to connect to the same server.
Which edition should I play?
Java for mods and PC play. Bedrock if you want cross-platform play with friends on mobile/console.
How do I know if a server supports my edition?
Check the server listing for Java/Bedrock badges. Crossplay servers support both editions.
Technical
What is the default Minecraft port?
Java Edition uses port 25565. Bedrock uses port 19132. You don't need to specify default ports.
Why can't I connect to a server?
Check: correct IP, matching Minecraft version, server is online, no firewall blocking, and correct edition (Java/Bedrock).
What does 'Outdated client' mean?
Your Minecraft version doesn't match the server. Change your version in the launcher to match.
What is ping/latency?
Ping measures connection delay in milliseconds. Lower is better. Under 100ms is good, under 50ms is excellent.
Safety & Rules
Are Minecraft servers safe?
Most servers are safe. Stick to reputable servers, don't share personal info, and avoid downloading suspicious files.
What if I get banned?
Check the server's Discord or website for ban appeal processes. Each server handles appeals differently.
Can servers see my IP address?
Server owners can see your IP, but not other players. Use a VPN if privacy is a concern.
What are common server rules?
No cheating/hacking, be respectful, no griefing (depends on server type), follow chat guidelines.
